It’s no secret that celebrities are some of the most attractive people in the world, so naturally their offspring often luck out in the looks department, too. Some of these ladies didn’t just benefit from a great gene pool — they also inherited their mothers’ stellar fashion sense. Here’s a look at 12 moms and daughters whose red carpet photos have started a few fashion trends.
Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn are matching blonde bombshells.
Some things never go out of style, and Madonna has done her best to ensure that this includes her iconic “Like a Virgin” ensembles (like her outfit designed by art director and stylist, Maripol). Helping the cause is her teen daughter Lourdes “Lola” Leon. The two launched the Material Girl juniors fashion line for Macy’s in 2010, which focuses on edgy, modern looks — many of which are reminiscent of Madonna’s early trends.
Ava Sambora, the daughter of our favorite blonde, mini-power-suit wearing nighttime soap star, Heather Locklear, and Bon Jovi guitarist, Richie Sambora, made headlines when she walked her first runway show at age 12 for dad’s clothing line, White Trash Beautiful. The mother and daughter have been known to wear the same clothes and also to catch a few eyes when they turn up at movie premieres together.
Former “The Cosby Show” star Lisa Bonet makes Bohemian chic into an art form, turning items mere mortals would cast off as thrift store duds, into street fashion art. Daughter Zoe seems to have inherited this talent. Still, it probably isn’t fair to give Mom all the credit. Zoe’s dad is musician and trendsetter Lenny Kravitz.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that the iconic editor of “Vogue” has a daughter who also knows a thing or two about looking sharp. Even though Bea Schaffer has said she will not follow her mother into the world of fashion editorials (she’s reportedly working at “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy’s production company), her red carpet looks are unlikely to end up on a worst-dressed list any time soon.
Nothing says, “Mom, I like your style,” more, than asking her to design your wedding gown — which is exactly what Beyonce did when she married rapper Jay-Z in 2008. The request was only fitting since Tina Knowles also designed Beyonce’s performance costumes. The two also collaborated on the fashion line House of Dereon (which was inspired by Tina’s mother). We can’t wait to see what they design for Beyonce and Jay-Z’s baby!
Melanie Griffith famously uttered the line “I have a head for business and a bod for sin,” and her mother is a former fashion model (and a Hitchcock starlet) — so it seems almost preordained for Griffith’s daughter, Dakota Johnson, to show up on red carpets rocking bold red lips and intense eyes. She’s also modeled for the MANGO clothing line and the Australian brand, WISH.
Another third-generation style starter, model Riley Presley (who’s full name is Danielle Riley Keough) uses her hefty dose of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s looks for some “I dare you to cross me” stares. She’s been modeling since she was 12-years-old for labels like Tommy Hilfiger, Dolce & Gabbana and Dior. Meanwhile, Keough’s mom, Lisa Marie Presley, has posed for magazine covers and been known to receive red carpet buzz, while her grandmother, Priscilla Presley, has owned a clothing boutique and her own line of fragrances. All three ladies appeared in a family portrait for “Vogue” in 2004 shot by Annie Leibovitz.
Here’s proof that there isn’t much truth behind the “dumb blonde” stereotype — especially when it comes to fashion sense and a successful acting career. Goldie Hawn has been fashion savvy since her days of mod miniskirts and body painting on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.” Her current style still flows nicely with daughter Kate Hudson’s love of glam red red carpet attire (and her casual-chic Bohemian looks for every day). Hudson is a regular among best-dressed lists and must-have hair features in fashion magazines and blogs — making her mother proud, no doubt.
It’s easy to master polished Hollywood elegance when you have such a good role model. Both of these accomplished actresses have a way of making even the most basic, everyday outfit seem effortlessly chic, proving that being a mom or a grandmother doesn’t mean you have to be a frump. While Gwyneth Paltrow has been known to take some red carpet risks, her mother’s looks — at least in recent years — are attractive yet, conservative.
Known for her acting chops and activism (and, of course, her stellar good looks), Susan Sarandon was once a Ford model, too. She’s aged gracefully, even modeling for Uniqlo’s Fall 2011 ad campaign. Eva Amurri Martino, Sarandon’s daughter with director Franco Amurri, has also modeled and looked well-dressed at events. She’s even been known to sit front and center at a few runway shows during Fashion Week.
